Take steps to stay safe

Leave the area immediately and go where you no longer smell gas
Call 911 and LG&E: 502-589-1444 or 800-311-7370 (press 1-1-1)
Warn others to stay away

Follow safety precautions

Do not report a leak by email or assume someone else already has
Do not try to extinguish fires or operate valves
Do not light matches, use switches, phones, or do anything that could create a spark in the area you suspect a leak

Know the signs of a natural gas leak

Restoration process after a gas outage

Gas is turned off
To safely restore gas service, crews must first visit every affected home and business to shut off gas at each meter.
System pressure is restored
Once repairs are completed, they will re‑pressurize the system.
Gas is turned back on
They then return to each location and restore service. Someone 18 years or older must be present.
Appliances are checked
Crews will access appliances, test customer systems, and turn on and relight appliances.

Carbon monoxide awareness

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless poisonous gas produced when coal, wood, propane, kerosene or natural gas doesn’t burn completely. It can build up from malfunctioning heaters, stoves or furnaces, using charcoal grills indoors, or blocked or unclean chimneys.

Natural gas must mix with the right amount of air to burn properly — a healthy flame is crisp blue. When natural gas burns with too little air, it can create carbon monoxide.

Exposure symptoms

A person exposed to carbon monoxide may complain of dizziness, headache, nausea, fatigue or other flu-like symptoms.

Safety tips

Make sure all natural gas appliances are properly adjusted and that chimney flues, vent pipes and heat exchangers are not cracked, bent or closed.

Proper maintenance

Protect yourself from carbon monoxide poisoning by having your chimney inspected and cleaned annually, properly maintaining your natural gas appliances and installing a carbon monoxide detector.
