Excess flow valves
An excess flow valve (EFV) protects a customer when their service line is damaged by automatically shutting off the flow of natural gas.
Protect your home with an excess flow valve
An excess flow valve (EFV) is a device LG&E can install on the natural gas service line, which is the underground gas line that runs from the gas main to the customer’s meter. If your service line is damaged and broken, an EFV will automatically shut off the flow of natural gas.
Issues can arise if a homeowner or excavator accidentally strikes a service line during digging. An EFV helps prevent natural gas from escaping from the damaged section of the service line and reduces the chances of a natural gas fire, explosion, property damage and/or personal injury.
EFV installation process
An EFV is an optional feature the customer can choose to have installed at his or her expense.
Eligibility
Most residential and small commercial customers who do not have an EFV on their gas service line may be eligible to have one installed for a fee (some services may not be eligible due to operational conditions).
