Mill Creek 5 Generating Unit
A new state-of-the-art natural gas combined-cycle generating unit will be LG&E and KU’s most efficient and advanced baseload generating unit.
Investing in new generation
Mill Creek 5 (MC5), a 645-megawatt natural gas combined-cycle (NGCC) generating unit, is under construction. It is expected to begin powering customers’ homes and businesses in 2027.
MC5, will be LG&E and KU’s most efficient and advanced generating unit. It will produce 65% less carbon per megawatt hour than a coal-fired unit. A similar Mill Creek Unit 6 will be constructed at the site with operation scheduled for 2031.
The MC5 project is more than halfway complete. All major electrical generating equipment is now onsite and has been set on foundations. Work now focuses on setting structural steel and installing pipe and electrical infrastructure.
