An easy, low‑cost way to support community solar energy

Solar Share is a subscription‑based program that lets LG&E and KU residential, business, and industrial customers support local solar energy without installing or maintaining private panels. Participants subscribe to shares of the Solar Share facility and receive bill credits based on the energy generated.

It’s a flexible, low‑barrier way to reduce environmental impact, support renewable growth in Kentucky, choose the subscription level that fits your needs, and even gift shares to others.

How the subscription works

There are three ways to enroll in Solar Share:

Call 800-356-5467, then press 1-4 (available Monday-Friday, from 8 AM to 5 PM)
A specialist will follow up to confirm your enrollment.
Track solar data
After the array section that contains your subscribed shares begins to produce energy, track the solar generation data through our online dashboard available to all participants at no extra cost.

Enrollment is on a first‑come, first‑served basis. The program is open to LG&E and KU customers on these rate schedules: RS, RTOD‑Energy, RTOD‑Demand, VFD, GS, GTOD‑Energy, PS, TODS, TODP.

As the makeup of your household changes over time, a joint account can help ensure continuing benefits from your Solar Share Program participation.

Gifting solar shares

Participants choosing the one‑time payment option may gift their shares to an individual, a business, or a nonprofit organization.

The recipient will receive solar bill credits for 25 years and gain access to an advanced meter to view solar production data.

Important guidelines:

Only one‑time subscription shares are eligible for gifting.
Gifts must stay within the same LG&E or KU service territory.
Shares must be purchased in $799 increments.

Live solar dashboard

Customers can view live and historical performance from the Solar Share facility, including kilowatts produced, irradiance levels, temperature, and total energy generated since July 2019.

The dashboard also shows:

Number of panels installed
Total acreage of the facility
Typical output equivalents (e.g., homes powered)

The facility includes:

6,134 solar panels
35-acre solar site
Up to 2,100 kW AC and 500 kW DC production in section one
Capacity to produce 3,500 MWh annually under normal weather conditions

These details help subscribers understand the impact and performance of solar resources producing their credits.

We are excited to share that we recently welcomed a flock of sheep to our Solar Share facility. The new flock consists of 49 ewes, or female sheep, and one male ram. The sheep will be grazing on grass and hay native to the area and already on the grounds of the Solar Share site. The flock is being cared for through a partnership with a nearby Shelby County farm.
