Right tree, right place
Learn how to choose and place trees to help prevent interference with power lines and reduce outages.
Plan before you plant
Before planting a new tree, consider where it will be located and how tall it is expected to grow at maturity. A tree that starts at six or eight feet tall can eventually reach heights of 80 to 100 feet, depending on the species.
The Right Tree, The Right Place guide helps you choose a tree that is appropriate for the space you are considering. It takes long‑term growth into account and helps prevent future issues, especially conflicts with overhead power lines.
The guide also includes practical planting tips to help ensure trees grow safely and predictably in their environment.

Planting near overhead power lines
Within 25 feet from power lines
When planting within 25 feet of an overhead power line, choose large shrubs or small evergreens and hardwood trees. Their mature heights should be no taller than 15 feet. See “Zone 1 — Shrubs” on the guide for recommendations.
