Dix Dam Generating Station
Historical Dix Dam Generating Station has been a source of renewable, reliable electricity for more than a century.
Sustaining communities through hydroelectric innovation
Dix Dam Generating Station sits in a remote ravine on the site of LG&E and KU’s E.W. Brown generating facility in Mercer County. Adjacent to the plant, and critical to its operation, are Dix Dam and Lake Herrington — the water source for the hydroelectric operations. Collectively, the plant, dam, and lake have ensured critical power for growth and prosperity over the decades.

A vision for early hydroelectric power
In the 1920s, electricity was coming of age and demands for it grew dramatically. Local resident L.B. Herrington developed the concept of using the Dix River for a power source to serve that demand.
Building a hydroelectric plant
The Kentucky Hydro-Electric Co. and the Dix River Power Company, which was later purchased by KU, built the dam and the three-unit hydro plant.
Dix Dam generates electricity
The dam impounded the river water into Herrington Lake, which was released to generate electricity at the plant.
